As you will see in the pages of this newsletter this week we farewelled our Year 12s. Finishing school is an important stage in a young person’s life as they move into adulthood. It is also a significant day for their parents and it was wonderful to have them attend our valedictory day on Tuesday with their children.
I am very proud of the way our Year 12s finished their schooling and the celebrations that were part of that. From the moving House farewells where each student was recognised individually, through to the prize giving assembly, the ceremonial releasing of the doves and the Valedictory dinner at Silverwater Resort, and lots of other smaller but no less significant occasions, it was a memorable way to finish their school days. As a year level they have been exceptional in the way they have conducted themselves for their entire journey at our school.
In sending them on to the next stage of their life journey we want to encourage our graduates to make the most of the opportunities that await them in life. As I said in my Valedictory address to the Year 12s:
“The reason many people do not live a fulfilled life is fear. Fear of failure. Fear of the unknown. But fear is only a feeling. It cannot hold you back. Fear of failure is so often an impediment to a fulfilled life… But it is actually essential to living a fulfilled life. Be willing to fail in order to succeed. Those who fail the most often succeed the most. Why? They try, they get better, they improve. They develop resilience. They have a crack. Put your full trust in yourself.
I like the analogy of a bird sitting on a branch in a tree. Something we see everyday. The bird is never afraid of the branch breaking. Why? Because the bird’s trust is not on the branch. The bird’s trust is in it’s wings.
Always believe in yourself. Trust your wings.”
I would like to congratulate our 2024 graduating class and wish them the best of luck for their upcoming exams.

Throughout his tenure as Head of Senior School at Newhaven College, Jason Scott was not only a respected educator but also a passionate advocate for Rotary Youth Programs, significantly enhancing opportunities for students to engage with these transformative initiatives.
Jason’s support for a range of Rotary programs has left an indelible mark on the Newhaven College community. He was a strong proponent of the Rotary Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), where students debate global issues, honing their diplomatic and critical thinking skills. Additionally, Jason championed the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), which focuses on developing leadership potential in young people, and the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program, which educates students on safe driving practices.
In recognition of his unwavering commitment to these programs, the Rotary Club of Phillip Island and San Remo recently honoured Jason Scott, congratulating him on his retirement. The club expressed deep gratitude for his role in ensuring that Newhaven College students consistently participated in these valuable programs, which Rotary trusts have significantly enriched their educational experience and personal development.
As we enter the final term of the year, it's hard to believe how quickly time has flown by. A tremendous amount of learning has taken place, and over the next few weeks, we will be busy with assessments to measure the exciting growth and development that has occurred in just one short year. There is so much to celebrate, and we are incredibly proud of the new learning achieved by both students and teachers. The strong commitment and dedication displayed by our students, teachers, parents and community have been fantastic, setting us up for future success.
Reading Certificates for Term 3 home reading habits were distributed to students, and we congratulate all who received a reading award for their outstanding efforts. I am very proud of the reading progress made this year, due to the consistent practice both at school and home, which is clearly reflected in the students' reading development. As we enter our final term, we encourage students to continue their excellent reading habits, and I look forward to distributing as many Term 4 reading certificates as possible!
During the first week of Term 4, Newhaven College celebrated World Teachers' Day. Thank you to our Junior School community for acknowledging this special day and making our teachers feel so appreciated. We are very fortunate to have such incredible teachers, and our parents and students certainly made them feel valued.
Our Junior School captaincy selection process has been revised for our 2025 leaders. Year 3 students are preparing speeches in class to present mid-term, after which a panel of teachers will vote for Junior School College Captains. House Captaincy selections will occur in House meetings, where students will present speeches and teachers will vote.
The importance and benefits of school camps cannot be overstated; these experiences are often the most memorable parts of a child's schooling and offer significant social benefits. At the end of last term and the beginning of this term, our Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 students all attended their year-level camps. It was a team effort between camp providers, teachers, parents and students to create wonderful memories for all involved. Thanks to everyone who contributed, and special thanks to our teachers for making these camps such a wonderful experience for everyone.
Next week, the Junior School is looking forward to an outdoor police visit, and Year 1 will have a wildlife incursion. There are many exciting events planned for the remainder of the term, and we are looking forward to finishing this extremely productive year on a positive and strong note.

Head of Junior School
We are excited to share highlights from our Year 2 sleepover, which took place last Thursday night and was filled with excitement and learning!
The evening kicked off with a special visit from the police in their highway patrol car, allowing students to explore and learn about road safety. The excitement continued as the Phillip Island CFA joined us for a fire safety talk. Students were engaged as they listened attentively and even had the chance to use the hoses, making for a truly interactive experience.
After these educational activities, we set up camp in the assembly area. The students enjoyed watching a movie and indulging in delicious ice cream, creating a memorable night of fun and friendship.
The following day, Friday, we continued the adventure with a trip to AmazeN’ Things for a round of mini golf, adding a touch of friendly competition to the day. Once we beat the rain and got back to school, they made their own sandwiches for lunch, getting creative with their choices!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a wonderful success.

We’re thrilled to share highlights from our unforgettable three-day camp at Candlebark Farm in Healesville! Our adventure began on Wednesday morning, filled with excitement (and a bit of nervousness) as we boarded the bus. After a fun ride, we stopped at Deep Creek Reserve for morning tea.
Our first adventure took us to Healesville Sanctuary, where we encountered a variety of Australian animals, including kangaroos, koalas, and even some magnificent birds of prey. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about their habitats and the importance of wildlife conservation while observing these animals up close.
At Candlebark Farm, the fun continued! We tackled the low ropes course, embarked on nature walks, and even got involved in kitchen duties, which we thoroughly enjoyed. One of the highlights was playing gaga ball—it was a blast, especially when we managed to get the grown-ups out!
Beyond the activities, we cherished the time spent bonding with our classmates, sharing stories, and creating lasting memories. This camp was a wonderful opportunity to work as a team and support one another throughout our adventures.
We’d like to thank you to our amazing teachers and parents who made this trip possible. A special shout-out to Mrs. Clark, Ms. Krieg, Mrs. Smart, Mrs. Huther, Sonia Vandamme, Mel Ferretto, Jock Potter, Tim Van, and Nick Russo for being our fantastic adult supervisors. Your support and encouragement made all the difference.
Year 3 Students
In Week 1 of this term, forty-nine Year 4 students headed to ‘Forest Edge’ in Neerim East with their teachers Kate Middleton, Rob Simpson and Jo Savona, teacher aide Katanya Hedrick and parent helpers Steve Regnier, Jason Moyle, Luci Mannix and Kim Hauser.
In a beautiful valley setting, surrounded by lush bushland, the students engaged enthusiastically in activities such as hut building, archery, a ropes course, a 382m flying fox, rock climbing and eating at regular intervals! Our students also showed commitment to making camp a positive experience for themselves and their peers, by having a go at all they were presented with, supporting each other and overcoming challenges with quiet confidence. Their growth from last year’s camp to this one was clearly apparent in the way they conducted themselves.
Congratulations to all our students on the independence and sense of fun they displayed on camp. Rob and I also sincerely thank our staff and parent helpers for generously giving their time to support our Year 4 students.

At our last Junior School assembly, Katrina Knight from Westernport Water attended to present prizes and certificates for the poster competition they organised for several local schools.
Katrina gave a brief talk on the importance of water and shared tips on how we can conserve it in our daily lives.
Congratulations to our prize winners from Newhaven College:
Years 1-2 2nd place Lucy Pirouet Newhaven College
Years 3-4 1st Place Ruby Pirouet Newhaven College
Congratulations to the students in the following photo who were presented with their Merit Awards and recognised at Junior School Assembly.
Coolamatong was a very fun camp. All the staff were amazing but we especially liked Keith! He was so funny and he knew all the Gen Z language, like ‘womp womp’. The activities we did with him included survival and bush cooking. Everyone loved bush cooking- we made popcorn, pancakes and damper. We also kayaked with Leah and we played a game where we split into three groups and threw a ball to our teammates and then threw it to Leah. And we won! There was another Leah, Chef Leah, who cooked yummy food.

Year 6
On the first night, we slept in tents and cooked food in the Trangia. Mostly vegies… not that much pasta. We had an awful sleep and in the morning we went on a hike. Three snakes slithered by, making some of us scream. After a challenging hike, we ate wraps on a pier and we caught a ferry home. All together it was an amazing Camp!

Year 6 Bass student Sophia Hardy represented Newhaven College at the Rotary Public Speaking competition last Thursday. The event was held at Wonthaggi Arts Centre. Ten local schools were represented. Sophia spoke about her greatest passion and where it can lead her in her future. Sophia spoke beautifully about her passion for becoming an author and how she hopes one day everyone will be reading one of her books.
Sophia was awarded second place for her speech. She was presented with a medal and a plaque.
Congratulations Sophia!
The first few weeks of Term 4 in the Senior School have centred around the last days of the Year 12 students at the College. For 15 students, Tuesday 22 October marked thirteen years at Newhaven College, whilst for others, the last of only one year here. Either way, Year 12 is a huge year in the lives of a teenager marking their transition to adulthood.
The Year 12 cohort marked two days of fun and frivolity on Friday 18 October and Monday 21 October with two dress-up days and a final BBQ lunch with House games before a formal farewell on Tuesday 22 October.
Tuesday saw the families of all our graduating Year 12 students descend upon the College to celebrate their schooling and their full breadth of experience across 13 years of formal education. The day began with breakfast in the amphitheatre – over 300 people celebrating the educational journey of our 97 finishing Year 12 students.
This was followed by all families joining all Year 9-12 students in their Houses for personal farewells of each Year 12 student. An intimate setting where each Year 12 student was personally farewelled by either a younger sibling or a close friend.
The formal proceedings at the College were then rounded out with a formal Graduation Assembly with all Middle School and Senior School students joining the graduating class of 2024 and their families to recognise the successes and achievements of each Year 12 student. All Year 12 students received their Valedictory Certificates, and we celebrated the successes of our best students in academic and sporting spheres, as well as recognising the considerable impact so many of our Year 12 students have had on the school and wider community.
A brief summary of the students winning our key awards is given below. The full list of award recipients can be found further in this newsletter. The College is extremely proud of the class of 2024, and the students listed below represent students that should deserve to be recognised for their outstanding commitment and determination throughout their time at Newhaven College:

Later in the evening, the class of 2024, and their families were able to celebrate their Valedictory with many of the staff who have guided these students over the years at Silverwater Resort. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and a delightful way in which to round out each student’s time at Newhaven College. This is a year level that had a marked impact on the College, the staff as a whole and so many of the younger students at the College.
All that remains for our Year 12 students now is for them to complete their VCE examinations. This group has worked incredibly hard this year and I have no doubt that they will give their very best in each of their examinations over what can be a stressful three-week period. Their teachers have done all they can, it is now over to each student to show the world what they have to offer. I have never believed in wishing students luck for examinations – when they go into their examinations well prepared, there is no need for luck, there is only preparation, determination and success. In seven weeks, we will determine the level of success experienced by this cohort!
Brett Torstonson
Head of Senior School
The final assembly included the presentation of awards, shining a spotlight on the incredible talent that Newhaven College fosters. Awards were given to students in each Year 12 subject who had achieved the highest grades and made significant contributions to the development of their subjects for the benefit of all students.
Tony Corr, Newhaven College Principal presented the prestigious Principal's Prize to Max Arceo. Max is an all-rounder, showing leadership in every aspect of College life.
The prestigious Papworth Prize was awarded to Ella Berry who was also the recipient of both the ADF Future Innovators Award and academic awards for four subjects. Ella exemplifies the values and academic excellence for which Newhaven College is renowned.

We congratulate all of our Year 12 Award Recipients for their success and recognition.
Before the formalities of graduation day, our Year 12 cohort let their hair down with a bit of fun. Dressing up and getting wet with Commando Games and a slip 'n slide up at the Year 9 Environmental Centre.
The final celebration for our Year 12s' Graduation Day was a night out with their peers, families and teachers. Silverwater Resort hosted a lovely evening with a delicious meal. It was a fitting end to a big day!
This year Newhaven College's chosen charity was Cancer Council. Cancer has impacted all of our lives, so this charity was chosen by the College Student Leadership for 2024.
At the final assembly, 2024 College Captains Max Arceo, Alice Mabilia, Tom Bird and Tahlia Williams presented a cheque to Cancer Council representative, and long time parent of Newhaven College, Kelly Fuery. The amount was an impressive $11,931.
We thank the entire College community for their support and contributions to this very important cause.
The international Duke of Edinburgh is a youth development program that encourages young people (aged 14 - 24) to challenge themselves through activities in four areas: physical recreation, skill development, community service and adventurous journeys. The Gold level also includes a residential project. It's a chance for young people to build confidence, leadership and life skills while contributing to their communities and exploring personal interests.
This year we have, again, broken our record for the number of recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Congratulations to these persistent young people who have been working for many years to achieve this award. It is, however, not just an award; it’s a journey where they have pushed their limits, gained new skills and made new friendships. This achievement will make them stand out to universities and employers as they stand out as dedicated, resilient and proactive members of our community.
Congratulations to the nine students who completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2024, Jade Ruffin, Sienna Lowrey-Steiner, Alice Mabilia, Chloe Harris, Summer Crestani, Ella Berry, Jack Ryan, Tom Bird and Tahlia Lindley (not pictured).

On the last day of Term 3, our Year 9 students enjoyed the challenging and action-packed commando games. Testing their physical and mental grit as they confronted challenges in cold muddy water. Only to then be hosed down with more cold water!
This event is seen as a 'right of passage' and one of the highlights of Year 9.
The VCE Systems Engineering course emphasizes the principles and practices of engineering systems, with a focus on problem-solving, design processes, and the integration of mechanical and electrical components. In Units 3 & 4, students are tasked with designing and fabricating a system that integrates mechanical and electrotechnological elements, while documenting the process in a detailed portfolio.
This year, all students have produced an outstanding standard of work, with three students presenting operational prototypes.
Fim Hindam designed and fabricated an automated self-stabilizing system for aircraft. This technology is intended for use in real planes to maintain control in critical situations, such as when a pilot becomes incapacitated.
Santiago Leys created an automated chicken feeder, incorporating multiple input and output technologies. The system includes RFID technology to identify livestock and deliver measured feed based on production type.
Tanner Mills created an automated tracking spotlight that utilizes thermal imaging technology to identify and track moving objects.
The work presented by these students reflects countless hours of design, fabrication, fault-finding, and problem-solving. Their prototypes are a testament to their creativity and ingenuity showcasing the high standards of our VCE Systems Engineering students.

Newhaven College is currently running its annual VCE Art and Design Exhibition for 2024, a celebration of creativity and innovation. The exhibition showcases the exceptional achievements of our talented VCE students, who have worked diligently throughout the year to produce an impressive array of works in a variety of media.
The exhibition will highlight the outstanding Unit 3 and 4 works from the following subjects:
This year’s exhibition is a true reflection of the students' dedication, creativity and hard work. Each piece tells a unique story, demonstrating the range of artistic, technical, and design skills honed by our students during their VCE journey. From intricate design concepts to thought-provoking art and media projects, the display offers something for everyone to enjoy.
We invite the wider school community to join us in celebrating the diverse talents of Newhaven College's future artists, designers, and innovators. Join us in applauding the creativity and commitment of our students as they showcase their impressive work!
On the opening night, students joined their families and teachers to enjoy a mocktail and cheese platter. As part of the proceedings, Visual Arts Captains Chloe Harris and Pip Thompson-Lord presented to those gathered, along with Art Teacher Rebecca Power. Presented on the night was Best in Show, to Issey Goss. Also the most Hard working and Committed student accolade went to Claire Miron.
Congratulations for an excellent exhibition and we wish all our VCE students the best for their upcoming exams.
On the last day of Term 3, our Senior House groups came together to perform some mad-cap versions of Disney classics.
Clarke won the day with their rendition of Rapunzel (or Tangled) with a 'uniquely talented' Rapunzel played by Daniel Caffieri. Second place went to Bass' performance of Aladdin with Jack Ryan playing an alarmingly blue genie. Third place went to Sambell for their highly energetic display of Beauty and the Beast, with Dean Lyle playing the dainty Belle. In fourth place was McHaffie's retelling of the story of Frozen.
The judges were impressed with the effort that went into each performance, and everyone in the audience had a great laugh.
Alumni Emma Volard and Jake Amy met at Newhaven College band camp when they were 16 years old. Ten years on, and the couple have found themselves performing at the Myer Music Bowl with renowned performer Bumpy, supporting Marcus Miller and Herbie Hancock.
Emma and Jake visit Newhaven College regularly to mentor and support our budding musicians.
All year, our four Houses have been competing to determine who is superior in the sporting, musical and cultural fields. This year’s competition was extremely tight and fiercely fought across the Middle and Senior Schools.
At final Middle/ Senior School Assembly, Principal, Mr Tony Corr had the honour of presenting the House Cup.
The final standings were:
4th - Clarke House
3rd - McHaffie House
2nd - Bass House
1st - Sambell House
The competition between Bass and Sambell was so close, a countback of attendance was required to determine a winner for 2024. Across all three major carnivals (Athletics, Swimming & Cross Country), Bass had an attendance rate of 71% and Sambell an attendance rate of 73%. Therefore, Sambell House is the winner of the House Cup for 2024.
Year 12 student Gabe Smith, and his sister Giselle have returned from Europe after representing Australia at the Mounted Games
Championships. Gabe hired ponies in France and Italy to compete, with their mother Natasha saying “finding a good match is the challenge” for Australian riders. However, Gabe rose to the challenge and broke new ground for the Australian team. He wrapped up the competition with a 7th in the World Teams, 13th in the World Individual and 3rd in the World Pairs championships.
“An Australian has never before qualified to ride in the A final, let alone score a podium finish. Gabe was the first,” explained Natasha. In the pairs, Gabe was partnered with Bella O’Hara, the current European Under 18 Champion. “It was such an amazing experience. They enjoyed riding other horses and learning from some of the world’s best. Making finals and representing their country was such a privilege.” Natasha said the pair made lifelong friendships and memories on the trip and thanked all the locals who supported Gabe and Gisele to follow their dream to compete overseas.
Congratulations Gabe!
In the middle of this year, the Phillip Island Football Netball Club were struggling with the state of the Cowes Oval. While the oval was being resurfaced, it was Newhaven College who came to the footy club’s rescue.
“Without the assistance given to our club by Newhaven College, I am not sure what we would have done,” Chris Ross PIFNC President said. “They gave us access to both their oval and school gymnasium for player training sessions, when our ground was pretty much unusable. Without them, we had nowhere else to go. I want to thank Newhaven College sincerely.”
Newhaven College is proud to support our community in times of need when we can. It was wonderful to see our facilities being used by the PIFNC.
In our ever-changing economic landscape, parents and caregivers are increasingly faced with the task of broaching the subject of growing expenses with their children. While the instinct may be to shield young people from life’s challenges, there's a growing belief that addressing real-world issues, including financial uncertainties, can actually foster resilience and understanding. Striking a balance between protection and education is crucial for those looking to empower their children.
To effectively introduce the topic of finances, we need to be mindful of the timing and setting of the conversation. Using straightforward, age-appropriate language helps maintain transparency, and openly discussing adjustments to the family budget can carry significant weight. By encouraging children to participate in finding creative ways to save and make thoughtful spending choices, parents can nurture a sense of responsibility.
This Special Report offers a valuable opportunity to enhance children's financial literacy, equipping them with the resilience needed to thrive in an increasingly complex world.
