Like many of you I enjoyed watching the recent Olympics in Paris. There are lots of elements to the Olympics to engage with. The parts I most enjoy is seeing non-mainstream sports have their moment in the sun and the stories behind these exceptional athletes – where they are from and who has supported them on their journey.
Last term we welcomed back to Newhaven alumni Drew Ginn to open our MTB Pump Track. Drew, who still spends a lot of his time in Inverloch, is one of Australia’s greatest Olympians having competed in four games and winning three gold medals as a rower. He spoke of how Olympians emerge from communities just like ours. Communities that support young people in their endeavours and provide opportunities for participation in a range of activities.
This week sees the opening of the Paralympics. The word “para” comes from the Latin that means “beside”. The Paralympics are not beneath or second to the able-body Olympics – they are beside them. They have their own extraordinary athletes and inspiring stories. And as Drew highlighted, we have a member of our community participating with alumni Beau Vernon making his debut for the Australian Wheelchair Rugby Team, the Steelers.
The Australian Paralympic squad has given themselves a nickname – 'Team Everyone'. It is a nickname I like. Two words that signify a lot. 'Team' meaning we are all in it together with a role to play, and 'Everyone' -indicating that we are all included, and no one is left out.
Schools are at their best when they reflect this Team Everyone ethos. We all, students, teachers, parents and carers, have a role to play in helping achieve success. Our students cannot do their best in isolation, they need to be accepted and supported. Whether that be a class, a year level, a homeroom or a House - everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and embracing this diversity together is the key to success.
Newhaven would like to welcome Bec Anderson as our new Admissions Officer. Bec is known to many of our community having worked in local real estate for a number of years prior to commencing this role. She is also a current and past Newhaven parent having had two daughters attend the school. If you have any enrolment enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact Bec.
Finally, on behalf of the College, I would like to wish all of our dads a happy Father’s Day for this Sunday.

We are incredibly fortunate to have such amazing support staff at Newhaven College! During Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week, we want to recognise the vital role our teacher support staff play across the College. Their dedication and hard work are essential in helping our students reach their full potential.
The College focuses on providing a wide range of support to ensure each child thrives academically, socially, and emotionally. Our tiered intervention programs address the unique needs of our students, offering targeted assistance and opportunities for enrichment.
At the heart of this effort are our teacher aides/support staff, whose hands-on support makes a significant difference in our students' lives. We would like to extend a special thank you to Des, Kelly, Katanya, Marina, Alyssa, Gail, Sonia, Lucinda, Marina and Emma for their exceptional work. We also want to acknowledge Kurt Chadwick, Ruth Turton and Cynthia Young, who lead and work closely with our support staff to ensure every student receives the care they need.
We are deeply grateful for their commitment and the positive impact they have on our community. Please join us in celebrating and thanking our wonderful support staff during Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week!
It has been exciting to unveil our new bus wrap. It really stands out on the road with the bright blue and smiling students on the side. The back of the bus promotes the fact that all our buses are carbon neutral.
It has certainly been put to good use with daily commutes, excursions and sports competitions.
We thank Michael Wright from South Coast Bus for his assistance.
On Monday the Newhaven College staff put on their aprons and cooked scrumptious cakes for the College Charity Fundraiser. There were fun designs with awards presented to the tastiest, most surprising and lots of other categories.
The cakes were judged by Year 12 Food Studies students Summer Crestani and Milly Dengerink with help from Meagan Hollings our Food Tech Assistant. They awarded the best cake to Prep teacher Fiona Smart's Chocolate and Peanut Butter Cake.
Funds raised will go to the Cancer Council.

We are delighted to welcome Dearne Young to our Junior School reception and administration team. Dearne will be working full-time at the Junior School reception, and we are excited to have her join our Junior School community. Please feel free to introduce yourself or reach out to Dearne if you need assistance during the school day.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Kylee and Melissa for the wonderful job they have done in supporting our Junior School reception. Kylee will now be based solely at the main reception, and we are grateful for her continued dedication.
On Friday 30 August, we will be hosting our Dad’s and Donuts Morning. This special event is designed for Junior School students to celebrate the important role of fathers or special people in their lives. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to share a special morning at school, in honour of the upcoming Father’s Day.
During this celebration, students will have the chance to show their dads or special guests around their classroom and share their work. We look forward to welcoming you to this special event, which will take place from 8:30 am to 9:00 am in the Junior School.
RUOK Day is a reminder to ask each other the important question, "Are you okay?" It's a way to show that we care about one another and want everyone to feel supported and comfortable speaking about how they feel. This day emphasises listening, helping those who may feel sad or worried, and reminding them that they can always talk to a trusted adult. RUOK Day highlights the importance of being a good friend, fostering meaningful connections, and spreading kindness.
To mark this special day, we will be holding a Wellbeing Lunchtime Club for our Junior School students on Thursday, 12th September. Fun games and activities will take place for students in the assembly area at 1:30 pm. We look forward to seeing our students come together for this important cause.

Our future Newhaven College Preps for 2025 have started their transition program. Over the past few weeks, children enrolled for Prep in 2025 have participated in library and story sessions. These sessions provide our future students with the opportunity to enjoy story time and borrow books. The goals of these informal gatherings are to help students become familiar with our school environment, meet new peers and offer a space for parents to connect. The Pre-Preps had a wonderful time with Mr. Corr on Monday and will enjoy their final library session for the term next week.
On Friday 9 August, Mrs. Austin and Mrs. Smart celebrated 100 days of school with their Prep classes! The school was filled with cheer, joy, streamers and costumes as the Preps arrived dressed up with 100 things attached to them. What an enthusiastic and lovely cohort of Preps we have… they certainly loved their day! Parading around the Junior School, there were many proud faces, not only from the Preps but also from their siblings, peers and our entire Junior School community. It was a lovely sight!
The first year of schooling is a very special time for both Preps and their families. The learning that has taken place during these 100 days is remarkable, and we couldn’t be prouder of our Preps for their dedication to learning both at school and home. It was wonderful to acknowledge and celebrate this milestone.
On Thursday 22 August students from Prep to Year 4 took part in the annual Book Week Parade in the MS Collect.
The theme this year was ‘Reading is Magic’ and we certainly had a magical time seeing all the wonderful costumes and diverse array of characters from a multitude of books.
Mrs Huther, our Head of Junior School, got the ball rolling with an interactive Acknowledgement of Country that included lovely hand gestures to go with the words. We then learnt about the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) who promote Australian authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers and other organisations to bring words, images and stories into the hearts and minds of children and adults via the Book of the Year Award winners.
During Library lessons, students viewed and read the shortlisted books nominated and the winners of the six categories including:
Older Readers (13-18 years) Younger Readers (7-12 years) Early Childhood (0-6 years) Picture Book, Factual Books and New Illustrator.
Students and teachers have viewed some fantastic books during the past fortnight and students have been supported to read, grow and be inspired by Australian literature as well as celebrate and explore our diverse culture and amazing natural environment.
To coincide with Book Week there will be a visiting author, Michael Wagner, speaking on Friday 6 September for students from Prep to Year 6.
Michael is a children’s author with a chequered past, having previously worked as a radio broadcaster with the ABC, a copywriter, a television scriptwriter/producer, a comedy writer and even a songwriter.
Michael has written many books such as, Dirt by Sea, Why I Love Footy and Destiny’s Right Hand Man.
We look forward to listening to Michael speak and thank our wonderful teachers and staff for making Book Week such a wonderful time.

Being the mum of a Prep student is exciting but also has its challenges. Who better to share your experiences with than other Prep mums? A group of our Prep mums got together recently for a social gathering at a Colour Wheel Workshop with local artist Kirsty Cargill.
It was a wonderful afternoon of creativity and bonding for these mums who will be together through the Newhaven College community for the next 12 years!
Thank you to Prep mum Pharrah Underwood for organising the event.
Mr. and Mrs. Prideaux have been hard at work writing scripts, composing songs, choreographing, and staging our Junior School Production, Just a Drip. The effort and creativity they have poured into this production have been immense, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated and talented teachers.
We also extend our thanks to all the parents who are assisting with costumes. Our Junior School assembly area has come alive with music, song, dance and drama. It has been lovely to witness the students' enthusiasm as they sing and fill our school with joy and energy. Well done to our budding and talented students for their commitment and dedication to learning lines and song lyrics. This production is a wonderful opportunity for every student to shine, and we look forward to celebrating their hard work and talent on stage.
Agatha Andrianopoulos in Year 4M created the winning image for the Production poster. There were 49 submissions, which all go on display around campus. Well done Aggie!
The Junior School production, Just a Drip, will be on at Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre on Thursday 19 September, 12pm and 6pm.

Year 1S had a pizza to celebrate winning the Values Award this week. The delicious pizza was kindly donated by Massimo from Isola.
Congratulations to the students in the following photo who were presented with their Merit Awards and recognised at Junior School Assembly.
The 2025 Year 7 Information Night was well attended by both current and new families. The evening was an excellent opportunity for parents and students to learn more about what Middle School offers. A special thank you goes out to Ariana Ward and Zac Basterfield, who spoke during the event, sharing their experiences as Year 7 students.
Ariana, who has been with us since Prep, and Zac, who joined the College at the beginning of this year, both provided valuable insights into life in Middle School. They highlighted the wide range of opportunities available to students, from diverse subjects to our comprehensive music programs, SEISA involvement and the variety of extracurricular activities on offer. Their commendable speeches reflected the positive experiences they’ve had and the growth they’ve seen in themselves during their time here.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Information Night, and a special thanks again to Ariana and Zac for their inspiring contributions. Together, we can continue to make our Middle School a place where every student feels valued and supported.
Last week’s House Cross Country was a fantastic display of fitness, determination and House spirit. We were thrilled to see students participating, each giving their best effort. Regardless of where students finished their contributions made the event a success and they earnt a point for their House! However, it was disappointing to see high absences, particularly in Year 8. I ask parents to support the school on this day next year, encouraging their children to attend school and participate. We encourage everyone to join in next year—there’s always something to strive for.
Congratulations to all participants; you’ve made your Houses proud! Congratulations to the following students who finished in the top 4 in their respective races. Well done to Ivy Addison, Jett Fawaz, Lucy Thompson, Ambrose de Gooyer, Ella Lomax and Lukah Fawaz who finished age champions! The results and photos of the day can be found in the Sport section of this newsletter.

Book Week's theme this year is "Reading is Magic." The Middle School celebrated with its inaugural Book Week parade, where students embraced the spirit of the week by dressing up in creative, interesting and House-themed costumes. Reading is a powerful cognitive exercise that stimulates brain development in all students. Through Book Week activities like storytelling and book discussions, we enhance cognitive abilities such as memory retention, critical thinking and problem-solving, all while cultivating a lifelong love for reading!
Last week, Middle School had the privilege of hosting two Police officers, Constables Nick Carlson and Megan Krause, who presented the "You Think You Know" program, developed by the Australian Federal Police. The presentation was tailored specifically for our Middle School students, and it covered a wide range of important topics that are highly relevant to our students' lives.
Nick and Megan spoke on several critical issues, including the importance of respectful and inclusive relationships, understanding bullying and the law, and the safe use of social media. They also addressed the serious consequences of sharing pictures without consent and taking photos of others without their permission. The presentation didn’t stop there—it also emphasised the importance of positive identity, and the responsibility students must call out friends who engage in unacceptable behaviour.
The content was delivered in a way that was age-appropriate for our Middle School students, making it both engaging and educational. The initiative, which aims to foster a respectful relationship between the police and youth, is part of a broader effort by the Australian Federal Police to engage and participate in schools across the country.
We are grateful for the opportunity to host this important presentation and believe it will have a lasting impact on our students. By reinforcing these critical messages, we hope to continue building a school environment where respect, inclusion, and positive behaviour are the norms.
Our Year 6 Buddy program pairs Prep students with Year 6 mentors to support a smooth transition into school. Beyond easing this transition, the program fosters a strong sense of community and belonging within the school. It gives Preps a trusted mentor to turn to, outside of their teachers, and helps build connections across different age groups. Additionally, the program offers Year 6 students a valuable opportunity to develop leadership and mentorship skills, which will become more important as they progress through Middle and Senior School.
Last week the Year 6S class took their Prep A buddies for a walk around campus. They ventured up to Year 9, had a chat with Mr Torstonson at Senior School and enjoyed the sunshine. Harvey the dog went along for the walk too.
Last week, Year 7 students experienced making a ‘kyaraben – character’s obento’, which features food decorated to look like people, characters from popular media, animals and plants. Students used a range of ingredients, including ham, vegetables and rice to make a healthy and appetising packed lunch.
The students really enjoyed the experience and were very proud of their final products.
Students in Year 7 HAS have been studying ‘Deep Time and Astronomy’ where the concepts of evolutionary theory, migratory patterns and knowledge of First Nations People have been linked with our understanding of Space and our Earth within it. Uncle Steve Parker visited our students to share his knowledge of the Dark Emu in the sky, song lines and seasons. Laura Brearley, known for her song writing and her creative and artistic skills then supported the students to create a short story with six words linked to 'Sky Country', the book by Aunty Patsy Cameron and Lisa Kennedy. These sentences were then written onto a template and sung/spoken to music.
We are grateful for the time given to us to support different ways for our students to learn.

Last term in English, our Year 8 students embarked on an exploration of Indigenous Australian history and the vital need for reconciliation. Through a study of key events in Australia’s past and engaging with firsthand accounts from First Nations Peoples, students delved into the significance of reconciliation and its profound impact on our nation.
This unit aimed to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of our First Nations cultures, fostering a greater awareness of the land they study on and the diverse cultural heritage it represents. Witnessing our Year 8 students embrace the richness of different voices and experiences was truly inspiring. Their journey highlights the importance of recognising and valuing the diversity that shapes our world.
As part of their studies, some Year 8 students wrote thoughtful and poignant letters to the editors of our local newspapers. The San Remo and Phillip Island Advertiser printed these letters last week.

The past few weeks seem to have flown by. Only last week, the school reached its termly ‘hump day’ – we are now more than half-way through the term!
Often young people will do the right thing in the most subtle of ways. Not looking for recognition or gratitude, but simply seeking to do what is right for both them and on the whole in simple, yet effective ways. This has very much been the story of Wednesday afternoons this term. I have been so impressed with the large swathes of Senior School students as they descend upon the Senior School Building in large numbers for Homework Club and Personal Best Club.
At Homework Club, we have seen upwards of 30 students come to seek some quiet personal time where they can work on their own and get challenging homework tasks completed in a supportive and focused environment. Many students come to Homework Club to seek assistance from the English or Mathematics teachers who readily offer their services to students who find the work in these two subjects particularly challenging. In addition to teaching staff, a number of senior students have taken to freely offering their own services to assist younger students with their studies, particularly in Mathematics. It is fantastic to see such dedication and community spirit shown by talented young people – it is important that those students are recognised, if only in a small way here, for their efforts in being prepared to assist others. These students may never know the impact they have had on other students who don’t necessarily share their flair for or engagement with Mathematics.
At the other end of the building, SS6 is regularly packed out with over 20 Year 12 students (with many more occupying the seated areas in the breakout spaces) coming together for Personal Best (PB) Club. Whilst a little brain food is on offer to these students, PB Club is an opportunity for Year 12 students to work quietly on their own, setting goals and focusing on the work that must be done to get themselves ready for the next SAC or get their headspace right for the impending examinations. PB Club also provides a collaboration space for those students who feel the need to bounce ideas off of one another, to seek assistance in some instances from senior staff or their peers, and occasionally, is an opportunity to look at their Study Program and make adjustments where necessary to put themselves in the strongest possible position to tackle their VCE examinations in October and November.
Across the hall, there is often another group of Year 12 students work with Mr Peter Clerks – support on offer for Year 12 Mathematical Methods students. There can be up to 70 or 80 Senior School students present after school engaged in highly productive academic pursuits from 3.30pm until just shy of 5.00pm when the late bus rolls out of school. It warms the heart to see the hum of productivity on Wednesday afternoon, and I would like to point out that all Senior School students are welcome to attend Homework Club, and all Year 12 students are always welcome at PB Club. You do not need to be a gifted academic, only one prepared to work hard and show the determination to be the best you can be and demonstrate a desire to achieve your own high personal standards. Sometimes ‘joy’ can take curious forms – for me, joy is seen in the desire of so many students to strive for excellence and work hard in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment.

On Saturday 17 August, four of our students, supported financially by our local Rotarians, participated in the Model United Nations, or MUNA. Four enthusiastic and well-informed senior students – Gabriel Winterson, Tilia Pires-Anderson, Gabriel Di Falco and Miranda Zalunardo represented Newhaven College on the model world stage and did so with true aplomb. Needless to say, they should be very proud of their efforts, and they learned a great deal about international diplomacy
Taking part in MUNA 2024 was an extraordinary experience, with every team showcasing their distinctive energy and creativity. Gabriel Di Falco and I represented Belarus, along with Gabriel Winterson and Tilia Pires-Andersen who represented Venezuela. Our teams debated on critical global issues: the South China Sea conflict, boosting the UN's role in promoting democracy and fair elections, fighting environmental crimes and improving food security worldwide. All teams shared their arguments passionately, offering valuable insights and broadening our understanding of international issues. I extend heartfelt congratulations to Gabriel Winterson and Tilia Pires-Andersen for receiving the Best Delegation award - it was truly well-deserved! I wish to thank Mr. Torstonson for mentoring our teams. Many thanks also to Mr. Corr for his consistent support and for attending our debates. This experience has been invaluable in enhancing our public speaking and negotiation abilities. I am also deeply grateful to Newhaven College for providing us with this amazing opportunity.
Our thanks also go to the Phillip Island and San Remo Rotary Club who sponsor and support Newhaven’s involvement in this program.

The Year 9 cohort has been busy exploring conflicts as part of the IDEAS course. 9A and 9K were fortunate enough to attend the Phillip Island RSL last Monday 19 August and hear from two past war Veterans who fought in the Vietnam and Afghanistan wars. Students also had the opportunity to roam around the RSL and take pictures with various artifacts and memorabilia.
Thanks to the RSL for their time and support in this incredible opportunity. Year 9s will continue to explore conflicts for the next few weeks before the IDEAS examination in week 9.

One major event in the College Calendar, the Year 11 Ball occurred on Saturday 17 August. Thanks in large part to the extraordinary work done by Ms Hannah Blake (McHaffie House Leader), nearly 100 Year 11 students and their parents descended upon Silverwater Resort to celebrate their penultimate year of schooling, put the pens down and enjoy a night of fun, frivolity and dancing. It is always such a joy to see our students take the opportunity to make the effort to either suit up or frock up for one night of the year where, quite simply, joy becomes the theme for the evening. It was so clear to me that the current Year 11 cohort is a close one. They very clearly enjoyed each other’s company, as well as that of their parents and the small, yet dedicated group of staff that attended on the night with them. In the busyness that so often envelopes both staff and students within a school environment, it is nice to simply celebrate each other’s company whenever possible, and the Year 11 Ball epitomises this most joyous of perspectives.

With over 300 employment roles available, the ADF offers myriad career opportunities for young people. Newhaven College recently hosted Navy and Army ADF representatives who shared insights into the opportunities available for students when they finish their schooling.
It was wonderful to see a range of students from Year 8 right through to Year 12 attend the information session and take advantage of the opportunity to have their questions answered.

Last Thursday the Grade 4 students were lucky enough to have a visit from some members of the Melbourne Stars. WBBL Star Liv Henry, BBL Star Reiley Mark and other members of the organization ran a clinic, an in-depth Q&A and had some great giveaways. Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch ran the Q&A, giving students insight into what it was like playing cricket at this level and how to set and achieve your goals. Students were treated to a visit from Melbourne Stars mascot ‘Star Man’ at the end of the session.
Thanks to Melbourne Stars for bringing such a fun and interactive session out to our school.

SEISA Senior and Intermediate Round 4 saw our schools come together to celebrate our inaugural Indigenous Round. Each school marked this round with ceremonies at the beginning of games, with the aim to share the history, culture and traditions of the Indigenous communities of our areas, and to promote reconciliation within SEISA.
Year 11 students Kate Thornborrow and Tyler Duell welcomed our visiting schools last Thursday with the College's Acknowledgement, with Marnie Banks and Sophie Gurr holding up the 'Be Brave Make Change' banner.
After participating in recreational gymnastics in both the UK and China, Year 8 student Mia Tillotson joined the Phillip Island YMCA competitive Gymstar team in 2020. Unfortunately, like most other sports and activities, COVID halted all external competitions for both the 2020 and the 2021 seasons. From 2022, Mia has participated in four competitions per year against gymnasts from across Victoria. She has achieved numerous individual apparatus awards as well as team awards. Like many modern day gymnasts, Mia's strengths lie in her power, with vault and floor being her two best apparatus.
Two weeks ago, Mia took part in her second competition for this season at Cheltenham Youth Club. This incredibly popular event proved to be quite a challenging competition, however the Phillip Island YMCA still managed to come away with 2nd place overall as a team, and Mia was also awarded 2nd place individually on Floor.
Congratulations Mia!

All Newhaven College families are invited to attend the MTB Academy Mountain Biking Fundraising ride this Saturday 31 August, 10am-2pm.
Entry is $30 per rider, with a sausage sizzle and drinks available on the day.As we settle into the second half of the year, with the finish line in sight for a number of our students, it’s a timely reminder that in the hustle and bustle of daily life, especially for students deeply immersed in their studies, it's easy to overlook the beauty that surrounds us. I’m certain the same could be said for most of us. The relentless pursuit of academic excellence, or the pursuit of ‘success’ in whatever field we strive in, often overshadows the simple pleasures that can rejuvenate our minds and spirits. Yet, taking time to recognise and enjoy these beautiful moments can provide much-needed balance.
Recently, my wife and I had the profound experience of watching whales as they swam through Westernport Bay near the Cowes jetty, a majestic sight that left us in awe. This wasn't a solitary encounter with nature's wonders. My wife and I frequently kayak, and our adventures bring us close to playful dolphins, curious seals and charming penguins. These experiences remind us of the incredible world beyond textbooks and screens.
For students, finding this balance is crucial. Immersing oneself in nature can be a powerful antidote to stress and burnout. When students step away from their studies to engage with the natural world, they return with a clearer mind and renewed energy. Whether it’s observing the graceful dance of dolphins, the serene presence of seals, or the beauty of a flower or tree, these can offer a fresh perspective, making academic challenges seem less daunting. Incorporating moments of gratitude into daily life amplifies this positive impact.
Gratitude shifts focus from what’s lacking to the abundance that already exists. This is highlighted in Hugh van Cuylenburg’s book ‘The Resilience Project: Finding Happiness Through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness’. In it he says, “Gratitude is a powerful tool that can increase happiness and wellbeing”. We know this to be true. Gratitude fosters a sense of appreciation for the small joys, whether it's a breathtaking sunset, a friendly encounter with a penguin while kayaking, or simply the feeling of the sun on your face. This mindset nurtures emotional resilience and enhances overall well-being.
Encouraging students to practice gratitude can transform their approach to learning and life. By appreciating the beauty around them, they develop a more balanced, fulfilled outlook. So, whether it's pausing to watch whales glide through the ocean or acknowledging the kindness of a friend, taking time to savour these moments enriches our lives in profound ways.
May we find make time to engage with the things which often go unnoticed around us with gratitude and mindfulness, and may our lives be enriched through them.

In today's world, where distractions are abundant and the pressure to excel is high, guiding children to develop healthy study habits is more important than ever. As students aspire to achieve academic success, the cornerstone of that achievement lies not just in their intelligence or drive, but in the study habits they cultivate.
It's essential for students to recognise that good study habits aren't merely about spending extra hours hitting the books. It's more about quality over quantity and having a more balanced approach. Emphasising the value of a routine is essential. Consistent study times establish a sense of structure and discipline, turning studying into a natural part of their daily routine rather than a burdensome task.
Additionally, how students approach their study sessions is equally important. Taking regular breaks is a crucial part of this process in maintaining focus and preventing burnout.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes sufficient sleep, a balanced diet, and consistent physical activity are indispensable elements that will significantly impact your child's ability to study effectively. Fostering these healthy habits is one of the most valuable gifts we can offer children, paving the way for a lifetime of learning and achievement.
This Special Report will help you support your young person as they embark on studying for exams.
On 7 September, our Year 6 Teacher Simon Furniss, a Volunteer Firefighter with Phillip Island Fire Brigade, will be climbing 28 floors in 25kg of kit and helping to raise $1,000 supporting Lifeline, Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and 000Foundation. Please help him “Step up to fight cancer, depression and suicide” by sponsoring him if you can.
So far the students and staff have helped him raise $630 – by recycling bottles and cans – so if you have any spare, please send them to the school for him to collect.
The Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb remembers the 343 Firefighters that lost their lives in the line of duty on 11th September 2001.
Simon’s stair climb race bib will include the name and photo of FDNY Firefighter Robert Curatolo in memory of the sacrifice that he made on that fateful day. Robert, a 6 year veteran of FDNY, had just finished his shift when the call came through of the World Trade Tower incident. He was going home to his new wife, having only married a few weeks before. He returned to his station and turned out with his crew. Robert was seen in some vision that was captured, just after the first tower collapsed, he was seen covered in dust and debris, walking with his crew towards Tower 2. Robert died that day supporting the people of New York – he was 31 years old.
Simon is honoured to carry the memory of Robert Curatolo – the bravery and courage of all those firefighters will never be forgotten.
You can also donate directly. Thanks to sponsors, 100% of every dollar donated will go to cancer research and crisis support.
